TIPS ON PROTECTING YOUR PRIVATE WATER SYSTEM FROM FREEZING.

• Ensure that no pipes are exposed to the elements
• Bury exterior pipes and lag any pipes that cannot be buried.
• Trace heating can also be useful to prevent freezing.
• Check that any backwash pipes/hoses are insulated
• Having a continuous fall on the drain pipework/hoses helps them to fully discharge after a backwash.
• Insulate as much as possible – lag pipes, fit insulation jackets to filter vessels and cartridge filter housings, use Kingspan to insulate the walls and ceilings of outbuildings, block any areas where there are drafts.
• Heat the building – have a correctly sized heater with frost stat installed to keep the building above freezing, if the building is large you could enclose the equipment so you are only having to heat that area. Check that the heater is working periodically especially if cold weather is predicted. Power cuts are frequent in some rural areas. If you have a power cut a different form of heating may be required.

TIPS WHEN YOUR SYSTEM HAS FROZEN

• Use of a heat gun or hairdryer will help thaw frozen pipes. Work through the system following the flow path of water. This may take some time! If a pump is not switching on pay special attention to defrosting any pipe fittings around control equipment such as pressure switches. Once you have the water flowing again check for any leaks and keep the area heated.
